What Is MSP? Why Wheat and Safflower Get Different MSP Increases | Kitchenomics

Aai’s Kitchen Garden Has an MSP

Aai: “Wheat ka MSP ₹25 badha, aur safflower ka ₹675? Yeh kaise decide hota hai? Sab crops ko same increase kyun nahi milta?”

“Aai, apne kitchen garden ko dekho.

Pudina aur coriander dono ugate ho. But dono ke liye same amount of seed, water, space aur care nahi lagti.”

Aai: “Haan. Har cheez ka hisaab alag.”

“Exactly.

Farming mein bhi har crop ka economics alag hota hai.

That’s where MSP — Minimum Support Price — comes in.

The government announces MSP for selected crops, taking into account factors such as production costs, demand and supply, domestic and international prices, and broader policy considerations. Press Information Bureau

For Rabi Marketing Season 2027–28, wheat MSP has gone up by ₹25 to ₹2,610 per quintal.

Safflower MSP has gone up by ₹675 to ₹7,215 per quintal. Press Information Bureau

Aai: “Itna difference?”

“Because the economics are different.

Cost of production, risk, demand, food requirements and policy priorities aren’t the same for every crop.”

Aai: “Matlab pudina aur coriander ka rate same nahi ho sakta. Toh wheat aur safflower ka MSP bhi same logic se nahi badhega.”

“Exactly.”

She thought for a moment.

Aai: “Lekin MSP ka matlab farmer ko har baar government hi kharidegi?”

“Not necessarily.

MSP is a support-price framework. The actual benefit depends on procurement arrangements, market access, crop and location.” Press Information Bureau

Aai nodded.

“Toh mere kitchen garden ka simple rule?”

“Every crop has a different cost.

So every crop can have a different price support.”

She smiled.

“Samjha. Pudina chhota hai, par uska hisaab bhi chhota nahi.”

Kitchenomics Takeaway

MSP isn’t one price for every crop.

It’s a different economic calculation for different crops.

Aai took a sip of tea.

“Kheti ho ya kitchen garden — jo ugate ho, uska hisaab samajhna zaroori hai.” 😄
