Why Can the Stock Market Fall When the Economy Is Growing? | Kitchenomics

Economy Achhi, Market Neeche: Aisa Kyun? | Kitchenomics

Aai: “GDP growth 7.8% hai. Phir stock market neeche kyun ja raha hai?”

“Aai, kyunki economy aur stock market same cheez nahi hain.”

Aai: “Kitchen mein samjhao.”

“Socho, ghar mein sabzi achhi ban rahi hai.

Taste bhi accha hai. Sabko pasand aa rahi hai.

Yeh economy ki growth hai — production ho raha hai, services chal rahi hain, demand bani hui hai.”

Aai: “Toh market ko problem kya hai?”

“Ab imagine karo gas cylinder, cooking oil aur masale sab mehange ho gaye.

Sabzi aaj bhi achhi hai.

Lekin kal ka kitchen budget badhne wala hai.”

“Aur stock market ko sirf aaj ka kitchen nahi dekhna hota.

Woh dekh raha hota hai ki kal ka budget kaisa dikhega.”

India’s economy is still growing strongly. Real GDP grew 7.8% in Q1 FY2026–27, and the RBI has now raised its full-year GDP growth forecast to 7.1%. Press Information Bureau

But the stock market can still come under pressure.

Why?

Because investors are also looking ahead.

Higher crude prices can raise costs for many businesses. Higher global bond yields can affect the attractiveness of emerging-market investments. Foreign investors can pull money out of equities. And rising inflation can change expectations about interest rates.

The RBI has now raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.5% and increased its FY27 inflation forecast to 5.2%. The Indian Express

Indian equities have also been facing pressure from rising oil prices, higher global yields, a weaker rupee and foreign investor outflows. Reuters

Aai: “Matlab kitchen mein khana achha bana hai.

Lekin gas aur ingredients ka future bill dekhkar sab tension mein aa gaye?”

“Exactly.”

Aai: “Toh economy aaj ka khana hai.

Aur stock market kal ka grocery bill?”

“That’s not a bad way to think about it.”

Aai smiled.

“Samjha. Aaj ki sabzi tasty ho sakti hai, par kal ka grocery bill dekhkar mood kharab ho sakta hai.”

Kitchenomics Takeaway

A strong economy doesn’t guarantee a rising stock market.

The economy tells us what is happening in the real world.

The stock market is also trying to price what investors expect next.

Aai took another sip of tea.

“Matlab market mein sirf aaj ka khana nahi bikta. Kal ki bhookh bhi price hoti hai.” 😄
