KYC: Bank Ko Mujh Par Bharosa Nahi Hai Kya?

One afternoon, my mother’s phone rang.

The caller said: “Madam, your KYC needs to be updated.”

She disconnected the call and looked at me.

“Pushkar, itne saalon se account hai. Bank ko abhi bhi nahi pata main kaun hoon?”

Fair question.

Me: “Aai, tum jab nayi bai rakhte ho na, kya karti ho?”

Aai: “Naam poochti hoon. Kahan rehti hai poochti hoon. Kisne recommend kiya poochti hoon.”

Me: “Bas. Bank bhi wahi karta hai.”

KYC means: Know Your Customer.

Bank wants to know:

👉 Who you are

👉 Where you live

👉 Whether the account genuinely belongs to you

Aai: “Par yeh toh pehle bhi bataya tha.”

Exactly.

But imagine a bai joined ten years ago.

Kabhi address change hua?

Phone number badla?

Kisi aur ne uska kaam sambhala?

Kabhi-kabhi confirm karna padta hai na?

She nodded.

That’s what KYC is.

Not because the bank has forgotten you. Because records need refreshing.

And fraudsters keep finding new ways to misuse accounts.

Aai: “Matlab bank mera interview nahi le raha?”

“No.”

“They’re simply updating their records.”

Then came the real Kitchenomics moment.

Aai: “Toh KYC trust nahi hai?”

Me: “Nahi.”

“KYC trust ka replacement nahi hai. KYC trust ki maintenance hai.”

Just like we service a gas connection even when everything seems fine.

The goal isn’t to find a problem.

The goal is to prevent one.

The Kitchenomics Takeaway 🍽️

Most people think KYC is paperwork.

It isn’t. It’s identity maintenance.

Because in the end,

“Bank ko baar-baar yeh nahi jaan-na hota ki aap kaun ho.”

“Bank ko ensure karna hota hai ki account aaj bhi usi insaan ka hai.”

Before returning to the kitchen, Aai delivered the final verdict:

“Theek hai. KYC kar lenge.”

“Lekin chai pehchaanne ke liye mujhe koi document nahi chahiye.”
