One evening, Aai was arranging jars in the kitchen cupboard. I walked in with my laptop.
Aai: Last time you explained this K-shaped economy. Ab kya naya alphabet leke aaye ho?
Me: Aai, K ke baad ab C aur E jaise shapes bhi economy ko samjhane ke liye use ho rahe hain.
Aai: Economy ki class kam, alphabet ki class jyada lag rahi hai.
Me: K-shaped yaad hain na, kuch log fast grow kar rahe hain, while some are falling behind.
Now, think of two kitchen shelves.
Upper shelf keeps filling up — better appliances, more savings, more choices.
Lower shelf has to think twice before buying oil, dal or vegetables.
Aai: Haan. Same kitchen, but different budgets.
Me: Exactly.
When K Starts Becoming C
Me: Ab imagine karo lower shelf bhi dheere-dheere bharne lage. That’s where the idea of a C-shaped economy comes in.”
Aai: Matlab jo peeche reh gaye the, woh thoda catch up kar rahe hain?
Me: Exactly. In India, there have been periods when rural consumption has grown faster than urban consumption, suggesting some catch-up in purchasing power.”
Aai: Toh gap kam ho raha hai?
Me: Some gaps, in some places — yes. But that doesn’t mean every income or wealth gap has disappeared.
And Then Comes E
Aai: Accha. Aur E-shaped?
Me: E is a different concern.
Top shelf is comfortable. Bottom shelf is already struggling.
But the middle shelf starts feeling squeezed.
Aai: Salary aa rahi hai, but month-end tak bachta kuch nahi?
Me: Bilkul. Rent, EMI, education, healthcare, insurance and everyday expenses keep eating into the monthly budget.
Aai: Matlab middle class bhi kabhi-kabhi sirf dekhne mein comfortable hai.
Me: Exactly.
India Is Not One Letter
Aai: Toh India K hai, C hai ya E?
I smiled.
Me: Shayad teeno.
K tells us about uneven growth.
C tells us about some sections catching up.
E reminds us that even the middle can feel squeezed.
Aai: Mhanje economy ka ek-letter answer nahi hai.
Me: Exactly. GDP bata sakta hai economy kitni fast grow kar rahi hai. But it doesn’t automatically tell us what is happening inside every kitchen.
🍽️ The Kitchenomics Takeaway
Aai: Toh asli picture?
Me: Kisi kitchen mein growth dikh rahi hai.
Kisi mein catch-up. Aur kisi mein month-end ki calculation.
Because one economy can have many kitchens.
